Jack Bauer finally defeated, but only temporarily

By a writers strike, not by bad guys, torture or terrorists….or dui’s.

While I’m generally glad about the writers strike, so the blowhard actors can see what they are really worth without someone doing all their work for them to pretend they are someone else (called acting), I am bummed that 24 is on hold.

Just when it looked like there would be a good season, this had to happen .

I just hope it’s worth the wait.

24 - The Season 7 Trailer

As I type this, the Season 7 Trailer is little more than 23 hours away.  I am holding the writers hostage for a real plot this year.

The actual season has been delayed by the wild fires as shooting on the Marine Base El Toro had to be postponed.  I wonder where the Marines fit into the plot?

I’m also hoping Kiefer Sutherland can stay sober while driving so they can finish the season.

What Happened to 24?

First they signed Janeane Garofalo as a character next year, which I can handle. Plus it shut’s up those that say that 24 is a conservative shill show. Just because err-America flopped doesn’t mean she can’t act, but we’ll see. At least they also invited John Billingsley of Star Trek Enterprise who can act.

Today, it’s announced that Kiefer Sutherland is arrested for DUI for the second time. I generally lose respect for celebrities and sports figures who abuse the law, women or fans and show my disrespect by not supporting them, their sponsors or the show. I’ll have to fight this one internally as I have liked 24 over the years.Last years plot was a joke and if the writer’s don’t do better this year, it could be over for me.

Here’s the killer, the DUI perp (Kiefer) is listed as 5′10″ and 150 lbs…….not big enough for Jack Bauer if you ask me. I fight bigger (and smaller) people at the dojo, but somehow I got the impression that he was a 6 footer….at some point size overpowers skill, unless there is excessive skill involved….but then this is acting. Well, at least it better be or I’m moving to another show.

another show.

IBM buys Language Analysis Systems

IBM buys lots of companies to add and fill out our middleware platforms. Today we announced the purchase of LAS or Language Analysis Systems. Here’s a quote from the announcement

Language Analysis Systems of Herndon sells software the government uses to check names in foreign languages against U.S. terror and other watch lists. The company released software last year that cleans up potential misspellings in databases, and shows the likelihood that a name is a match with a file on record.

The new software is designed for use in marketing, database management and compliance with financial regulations.

Language Analysis Systems grew revenue from $2.1 million in 2003 to $3.9 million in 2004, an 86 percent increase. The company generated $6 million in revenue with 20 employees in 2005, according to the Small Business Administration.

As readers may know, I’m not the reporter on IBM announcements, I see things from my own point of view, here’s a link to the story from TechWeb if you want to read the press version.

I liked cops and robbers as a kid and I like it when the good guys get the bad guys, like my current favorite - Jack Bauer of 24. I also am geeky and like technology so I like this one.

Check names and get terrorists from watch lists, I like the way that sounds. Maybe we would have found Mohammed Atta that way, maybe not.

Maybe Chloe can use it to find the bad guys this season, that would be cool.

RIP Edgar Stiles

If IBM had as much IT power as the computers at CTU on 24 , and the expertise to use them, we'd be back in court for the monopoly trial.

I was sorry to see Edgar exit the show as I'm a huge 24 fan (starting to approach my trekkie tendencies). I can't count the times he's saved Jack by uploading satellite images of where the bad guys are or decoded something.

Now if tech support at most companies had Edgar qualities, a lot of things would have been solved a lot easier and faster.

What I'm going to miss the most though is I always held out for a Chloe/Edgar hookup….
